In 2016, a study published by the CDC estimated that 20.4% of adults in the United States suffered from chronic pain, while 8.0% suffered from high-impact pain. For many years, over-the-counter medication, progressed to opioids for long term management. Amidst the challenges of tackling chronic pain for patients, a bigger challenge is presented for people without health insurance. Access to medical services and the necessary medication can be a daunting situation for those without insurance coverage, especially those struggling to make ends meet on a regular basis.

This same CDC study showed that chronic pain was more prevalent among adults living in poverty and adults with less than a high school education. Through Medina Community Clinic, Dr. Maher Ibrahim has entered as a ray of hope for chronic pain sufferers without health insurance.

Dr. Maher Ibrahim is an interventional pain management physician, who received his medical degree at Alexandria University School of Medicine, in Egypt. Upon moving to the United States, he continued his training in anesthesiology at SUNY Stony Brook and interventional pain management at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Today, he practices in Hamilton, New Jersey and maintains affiliations with major local hospitals.

“I’ve suffered with chronic lower back pain for years. My work has me lifting and doing tasks that are stressful on my body.” Many of the patient cases received at Medina Clinic have similar stories – hardworking individuals, pushing through the pain and discomfort, barely making enough to cover essential needs.

“I depended on Tylenol for my pains, because I don’t have insurance. Because of Medina [Clinic], I got to see Dr. Ibrahim and until I got to his office, I didn’t know he was such a qualified doctor. But he gave me so much attention and went through my whole story. He was the first doctor to give me full explanations, real answers and a real solution.”

His teaching abilities have been stellar since the beginning of his career in the United States. While completing his internship at Long Island College Hospital, Dr. Ibrahim taught anatomy, biochemistry and microbiology at Princeton Review School. His scholarship has always proven impressive, as he completed his residency in the top of his class. He has various publications and abstracts and has received multiple awards during his training and teaching career, namely “Teacher of the Year” from Princeton Review School and Hahnemann University Hospital.

Dr. Ibrahim’s mission aligns exactly with Medina Clinic’s mission – to return patients to a more active, healthier lifestyle.

Rheumatologist

by: Sameen Butt, Program & Outreach Coordinator

The CDC reported in 2015 that about 40% of adults in New Jersey reported limitations in work and 48% reported limitations in general activities, attributed to arthritis. The unfortunate statistic that often goes ignored is the limited access the uninsured population has to specialists who treat and manage arthritis – rheumatologists.

Words come short when patients are asked about rheumatologist Dr. Qaisar Usmani. However, the one common descriptive used by all his patients is – compassionate. It is rare to find a physician universally raved about, but Dr. Usmani is indeed the diamond in the rough.

Dr. Qaisar Usmani, a board certified internist and rheumatologist, has been in practice in the Hamilton, New Jersey area for over 15+ years. With his medical education from Rawalpindi Medical College, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Usmani continued to specialize in internal medicine and rheumatology in the United States.

In his scope of practice, Usmani sees patients suffering from osteoarthritis and degenerative bone diseases, as well as autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, and ankylosing spondylitis.

While establishing his private practice, Usmani took from his faith to constantly serve the community with the skills you have attained. Much prior to the existence of Medina Community Clinic, Usmani was keen on seeing patients who do not have health insurance or cannot afford medical care for a myriad of reasons. He opened the doors of his office for whoever needed his care, exemplifying immense compassion and empathy for the community around him.

At the conception of Medina Community Clinic, there was no second thought required before approaching Dr. Usmani to join the panel. “His compassion and energy for his patients is unlike I have ever seen before,” says Judith Hamilton, Medina Clinic’s patient care navigator. Hamilton has been working closely with Usmani since she joined Medina Clinic in November 2015 and is all praises for the doctor. “[Usmani] has one of the most outgoing and entertaining personalities, and he is equally as skilled and knowledgeable in his field. I have never had a single patient give me less than excellent feedback on him.”

When Dr. Usmani is not serving patients or his local faith community, he can be found engaged in health and fitness activities. Attaining a Masters in Nutrition from University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, his interest and passion for an overall healthy lifestyle is evident. His patients also recount his positive encouragement towards holistic lifestyle modifications for an improved quality of life.

Year after year, Usmani walks away with the highest volume of Medina Clinic patients served. In the year 2019, he alone completed 38% of the patient visits across all 17 of our active specialties. We are honored to have a talented, empathetic, and compassionate physician on our provider panel here at Medina Community Clinic. His service to Medina Clinic and to the patients of the Greater Trenton area will always be deeply respected.

Dr. Aisha Chaudhry

Podiatrist

by: Sameen Butt, Program & Outreach Coordinator

The American Podiatric Medical Association estimates that the average person walks over 100,000 miles on their feet over their lifetime.  We often take our feet for granted for the majority of our life, until an issue arises, limiting our movement or even preventing us to perform our routine activities. Even then, many of us do not know of the dangers of pedal (foot) illnesses nor of the physicians, trained specially to care for our natural mode of transportation.

Upon first sight of her, you see a confident, warm-hearted woman, cloaked in a white coat, pens clipped to her pockets. When she begins conversation, the former sight remains, but the intelligent physician and businesswoman within her shine brightly through her words and demeanor. This is Dr. Aisha Chaudhry.

Dr. Aisha Chaudhry is a podiatric surgeon and owner of Advanced Care Podiatry and Pennsylvania Foot & Ankle Associates, PC. She completed her undergraduate and graduate education at Temple University. She went on to complete her podiatric surgery residency at Cooper University Hospital, in Camden, New Jersey. Her service to her alma mater continues till date, as she sits on the Board of Visitors and holds an Assistant Professor position at Temple University School of Pediatric Medicine.

While many attend inner-city universities and hospital training programs, not all physicians graduate with the mindset of consistently giving back to the community. Dr. Chaudhry proved to be one of the few who left with the intention to utilize her training and skills to benefit the less fortunate populations.

“The best advice I can give to new and young physicians is that there is more than enough money out there for everyone. Do good in the world, and good will come back to you.”

Through her practice at Advanced Care Podiatry, Dr. Chaudhry offers a wide range of podiatric services for the uninsured patients of Medina Community Clinic. Every patient in her care has left satisfied and extremely happy with her kind personality and humility.

Apart from her patients through Medina Clinic, Dr. Chaudhry also regularly offers her services to the Family Health Clinic of Capital Health, as well as welcoming charity patients in her own office. Dr. Chaudhry also is a family woman – a wife and a mother – along with maintaining an active role in her local faith community. She believes strongly that her faith drives her to all the service she provides on a personal, professional and communal basis. Her passion to serve all equally aligns entirely with Medina Clinic’s mission, hence our staff unanimously selected her as “Provider of the Year” for the 2019 service year.
